About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

Canada is a big place to navigate and we don't all have access to big city suppliers. Click on the tags at the end of each entry to look for specific supplies, or locations. If you have any CANADIAN sites you know of, please email me and i will add in another entry, or you may add in the comment section.

Supporting Canadian textile artists, part 1

When i first started blogging five years ago, there was a severe lack of any links except to a few US/Brit/Aus artists, and fewer blogs other than knitters. I felt like i was in a wasteland, and screamed everytime i found either a Canadian and/or something other than knitting.

I will add more names, as i find them, and as i have the time. There are quite a few now and some i have "talked" to over the years, so if you're one of them, don't be insulted if you're not in here yet:} These are in no particular order either!

Darlene Nadeau   wonderful wonderful gorgeous shibori---mostly "veils" for belidh (belly) dance, but fabric is fabric and these could be used as fabric not just a finished "product"--with links to her Etsy and Flickr sites.

Patricia Chauncey amazing "extreme" textile practices---google her for images, as she rarely posts photos of her work.

Carol Weibe  Carol's work with paper as a textile is soothing and spiritual. Her "cracked paper quilts" are a lesson in harmony and colour composition. She has a NING site as well where she shares techniques, methods, general discussion and inspiration.

Judy Martin Judy's artquilts and paintings are emotional responses to the cloth and to situations and locales. Her website is here.

More suppliers

http://www.designerbeads.com  Toronto Ontario

http://www.gittas.com/   needlework supplies, Mississauga, Ontario

http://www.gsdye.com/  Dyes, fabric paints, printing supplies, books, fabric for dying Toronto and Markham Ontario   one of THE best in Canada, if not the world!

The Cloth Shop, Vancouver BC-- Note the fact that FQ's here are Canadian as well! Since we measure in metres, a fat quarter is larger :}

Jefferson's located in Vancouver, BC The website is slow to load, and not complete yet, you can only buy if you have a business, but if you know someone else who has a registered tax number, it is well worth it. I used to buy all kinds of supplies from them when i had my wearable art business in the 90's. They are located in Vancouver and have an extensive range of products. I remember buying a bolt of fusible for 38 bucks! It ran out finally after 8 years :} Everything from books and threads, to beads, bra "enhancers", tools, notions and embellishments.

Dreamspin Fibres Campbellford Ontario. I can attest to the fact that their products, service and pricing are good--i ordered prefelt merino batts and they are STUNNING, larger than i expected and high quality.

Tristan Threads   Richmond BC. Here too, i have ordered and received luscious high quality Aurifil threads at a fraction of the price elsewhere! Check out their "doorcrasher" specials.

Nusso Pillows  Cushion and pillow forms at very reasonable prices, particularly if you buy "bulk". Toronto Ontario

i'd buy locally if i could!

There is a great dearth of decent supplies here in the fair city of Calgary for textile art afficionados. Beyond a few lovely quilt shops, "regular" fabric stores like Fabricland and the occassional bead store, finding Serious Supplies is a Serious Problem! None of the art supply stores have much of a section devoted to fabric dyes, paints or materials.

The closest place is Okotoks, about 49K from Calgary, where retreats and fibre festivals are often held. Of course at the moment, i can't find any listings to show you...if you have any, please feel free to add them to the comment section and i will list in another post, or email me them to me.

I have found a bead place that according to Anne Marie, is FABULOUS. BEADFX is located in Toronto, Ontario, or you can order online. The prices and selection look wonderful, and they blog sporadically, and not always on topic (sound familiar?:})

There are FANTASTIC papers at The Paper Place, also in Toronto. The "Watermark" page is my favourite!!

Good selection, pricing and service for textile art books in a large selection of techniques at Books for You, in Edwards Ontario. I've ordered twice from them and both times was very pleased with their speed and costs.

Treenway Silks, on Saltspring island in BC----YUMMMMMMMMMMM--wish i could have gone when i lived on Vancouver Island! Yarns, ribbons, fibres, books, anythjing to do with silk.

Wallack's---"regular" art supplies--paints, brushes, markmaking tools and papers. Ontario and Quebec.

Stitches, also on Saltspring Island, BC---also blogging. "Art Quilting Supplies for the Discerning Textile Artist"

Shades of Clay--Canadian resource for an eclectic range of art and craft supplies. Predominantly Polymer clay, but some other stuff available as well. Port Colbourne, Ontario

MAIWA--known everywhere for its amazing collections, instructions and materials for natural dyeing and other tetile techniques--one of THE best, Vancouver, BC, 2 locations. Apparently they also are blogging now. I often bought from them when i lived on Bowen Island. Very knowledgeable, and though a tad spendy, you get the whole meal deal with each purchase.

OPUS  Though a general purpose art supplies store, they have a great selection for textile artists in several disciplines. Vancouver and Vancouver Island BC.

OPULENCE Also very good, dedicated solely to textile arts--dyes, blanks, books, stencils, paints, you name it, they have it and great help. North vancouver BC

More as i find them!!!
