Swapswap progress
Thu, November 9, 2006 at 11:24AM Hmmmmm. The previous entry has made me think that there is a very valid reason i'm having difficulty with this project. I could also be way off base here, but that's the way i work :}
I said/asked "Is a style a symbol? Do certain elements of the actual "hardware" become symbols? " Anything in my stash is now a symbol for me, following this rationale. I accumulate things in my studio because they have some intrinsic, intangible meaning for me, something beyond "it's pretty and i like it"----what makes me choose one floral over another, a sheer instead of cotton, paint rather than dye? Even if i don't recognize it when i first acquire it, there is usually a plan somewhere in the vasty dimness of my lizard brain that says it's important. (The lizard part of your brain is that part that is "basic" impulses, desires, instincts.)
So, as much as i like fondling other people's stashbits, when i am confronted with lovely little piles from 4 different people, i am suddenly at a loss! Can i do justice to the "hardware"------can my "software' process the materials and come up with a "program"? (Sorry for the tech analogy, probably lame anyways) I decided to stop "looking" and just "see" what was there. Sigh of relief. That pesky overanalytical part of me/my process always gets its big hoofies in there somehow, but this time i stomped on the buggers and i did what i DO, rather than trying to second guess what i thought the recipient was (possibly)anticipating from me--- Bente's is almost done, 3 more to go!
Picasso said, "In order to be a painter,
you need to know how to paint, and when to stop."
