About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

noodling

Wish i had something more exciting or revelatory to show, but i've just been noodling this week :}

The one above started curling and becoming bowl shaped--with a felt or knit, it would probably work as a vessel treatment.

A bit of ribbon, the black.

I had to do something as i'm feeling a bit creatively deprived and bereft of cleverness Crying.  Sometimes i forget that even though there are a million new products to use and hundreds of techniques, the old steadfast can still be as good if you just try it again! I know that i have on too many occassions fallen into  trying everything in sight, a condition i nicknamed a long time ago as "Blogarhea"! (Since most of what i see is online) The diet is too rich sometimes and the basics get lost in the sauce, if you'll forgive the awkward analogy! Today i went back to basics with one of my machines and its few stitch settings. I particularly like the double needle effect with two different colours in the needles and a third in the bobbin. I rarely(almost never!) change my tension settings, and found the bobbin side was much more interesting! (Top photo is done regular way, the other two are done with the bottom on top.) Even a single needle with another colour in the underside had lovely effects, making it look like hand stitching in places. I'm building some more "components" to use in future projects, as the box is emptying fast! Stitching these over and over with a thin batting makes a very firm structure that would be perfect for vessels, forms and books; no need for that expensive Timtex! I deliberately used almost a monochromatic scheme as i wanted the texture to be more important than the colour.

I think this would be quite in effective in blacks, browns, cream and pale yellows on either a tea dyed or rust dyed piece, and have in mind some boxes of unusual shapes.

I've been diligently working on the two Exquisite Corpse pieces i have at the moment, one for Vero, the other for Susan. I SO wish i could show you the pics!!!!!!!! The deadline for Vero's is the 25th so best finish it up this weekend!

 For your delectation and amusement, some eye candy that may contibute to your own case of Blogarhea, though not all of these are blogs:

Laced With History    I especially like Betsy Brandt's glue and pigments swirl!!!

Did you know that Quilting Arts TV has some pretty cool tutes and projects? You have to register, but it's free.

Needlewoven lace leaves  I used to do a lot of this when my son was a baby and i had no machine or money--some of my threads were unravelled from stuff i found in the "free box"!

The next time i'm really bored and want to make something, i'm going to check through this site! How to build my own robot! How to keep chickens in a harsh climate! How to ship a tiger to Canada! Knit a penguin!  Make Carrot Caviar and Parsley Soda! All true, and all with instructions, some clearer than others....

I don't normally like stuff like this, but it's so cute!!!! RickRack Owl There are other tutes on this blog as well for various rickrack treatments--hmm, was that why i actually saved all mine?

Supper's a-callin"......

I too would love to post pictures, but the lady of the corpses said "No pictures", remember ;-) Just kidding.
I'm eager to see how all our pieces will come out.
When I made the door you can see on my blog, I did not have the right fabric, and I had fun with my machine trying all those stitches (I've purchased it recently) to make the fabric I needed. I surely will renew the experiment. Yours is very inspiring.
