About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

touching base

ARGH. Getting "My Heart Has A History" on its base/background reminds me of why i rarely do "large" pieces. I pinned it within an inch of its life and machine basted everything, but certain paws got into the act, and i had to redo some areas, picking strands of fine white fur out as well. Mo had decided elements needed shifting---i had to remind him that the so called "lumpy" areas were there for a reason, not merely to discomfort him!

I admire those who can do the king sized, the monumental, the freaking HUgOrmous------my 34long x 27wide is just a babe in the woods in comparison, but that myopic thing happening makes it look like a football field! I have one of my great granny's quilts, a twin sized dresden plate, very simply executed and stitched, but the time, the time she must have spent on it! I can see why quilting bees were so necessary, even with utility quilts. I've never felt comfortable machine quilting bigger pieces either--something always borgles up or misses the edge by a lousy but very visible half inch. I suppose some judiciously applied Frankenstitch would help with that though :} There will be some stitching with Lalage on this...

At least with things attached, i'll be able to drag this puppy around wherever i go now--i can put a few stitches in on the bus during the commutes to and from work, on lunch break and whenever---the deadline is still 82 days away but at least a week and a half of that at the end needs to be for photographing and the mailing deadline---so, say 68 days to completion-----can i do it?????

Lots to read here and not time right now... but thanks for links and a nod to the quilt show... ought I to be interested too? I still fight a neg. pavlovian when I read the word quilt....ouch...perhaps I shouldn't say that in Canada. I might get bad feedback from this but I did say I fight the response...so maybe there is hope for me.

Of course you can do it...I have faith in you. Remember...work in 15 minute increments and it'll be done before you know it.

Yo, that giant monster I made of a chuppa/mandap made me realize that large scale things are super hard! I understand.
