About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

Over the next few months, i will be moving my blog in entirety to my new space. Please stay tuned for the final shifting, sometime in July of 2010. FyberSpace Shop Slow Cloth on Facebook

circle mojo

I've been looking again, and still, at Deb's, Jude's and Judy's and wondering how such a simple, unassuming, universal shape can be made so personal. Deb's are organic and personable, Jude's are points of consciousness and story chapters, Judy's embrace the awe of space and light.

Mine? Maybe not so "deep", at least not yet. Even symbols take time to settle in and find their spot, you should excuse the pun :} As i experiment with the method, i know something will happen and they will take the right path. But, I have found "my" circle.

This is the same form of the circles i used on the tassel in a previous entry. I want to call them chips! A handful of them feels so satisfying, and one is just not enough! I dug through my Components drawer and cannabalized several UFO's. I had started on Sunday using my flower stitcher again, but Lalage, alas, does not like it and though wonky may have its fans and uses, the resultant circles weren't what i was looking for. Even when it works though, this time they're too small for my purposes, so i just started drawing around different sizes of jar lids, coffee cups, cans, whatever was at hand and satin-stitching the edges.

 And no calories! Top left pieces from an old wearable art jacket/quilt, top right scraps from my "Emergency Self Esteem Kit" book/bundle  and the ones on the right bottom are from experiments awhile ago with roving and novelty yarns with the programmable stitches on Lalage. The ones on the left bottom are my favourite of this batch, made from a "sample" done months back also:

 Because i don't use stabilizers (hate 'em actually), and didn't worry about grain, some of these curled and roiled and bubbled on the bias--love the textures and shapes. And they're portable for handwork wherever i am, always a little bonus. I still haven't figured out how to do the beadwork on the bus--too short a ride, too crowded and too bumpy :} Other riders stare at my hand embroidery happenings, but so what: there's nothing like that feeling of having accomplished something in 45 minutes that would normally be "wasted"!

Though i used Lalage to do most of the groundwork, these could be completely by hand as well. I do have an idea for these and that will involve hand propulsion :}

.........to be continued.................

Yum. Hand embroidery in the wild is a good thing. Think of the consciousness raising you are doing!
