About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

Over the next few months, i will be moving my blog in entirety to my new space. Please stay tuned for the final shifting, sometime in July of 2010. FyberSpace Shop Slow Cloth on Facebook

what if i make a hole?

This is a multiple of an image cropped from one of the art journal exchange pages i did way back in Feb of 2007. (See the blog over in the left side bar.) The piece was glass, found i don't know where, and as i look at it, i am entranced. It plays not only into my love for hand embroidery, but of dimension as well. And given my "hole dream" a couple of nights ago, perhaps a natural thing to pursue.

But, no glass anymore like that. So what if i make my own? Of course, i'm not a glass blower, am afraid to cut glass, and can't fake it, so here's how i did it.

The perfect fabric, a tie dyed Procion cotton from college days (93? 94?):

And a lovely new hole to add to the sampling files:

When i actually use these in/for a piece, i will tack it to the background invisibly. I was too excited about the idea and had to work fast!

The piece I am working on now started with two holes revealing the layer/color underneath. I wish now that I had not needle turned them so carefully.

Didn't you say that your dream had holes that when you looked through them you saw chambers or other rooms? Or am I not remembering correctly? I like what you have done. AND, I would normally NEVER EVER make a suggestion to another artist but when I look at the piece, even rushed and first "draft", I want to see more. Another layer, another layer..........but, sigh, that could just be me. :)Bea

Deb, i just can't needleturn circles so i faced the hole ----i could certainly see this one with rough edges though--can you unpick yours?
Bea, thank you--there will be more, no fear :} I need layers upon layers, upon layers when i actually get to that piece!

mmmmm...oh, the possibilities. I look forward to seeing where you go with this ... also hope that I can remember this approach for some future work/solution of my own. Thanks for sharing your creativity and enthusiasm.
