About

I am a Canadian artist in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily with textiles. I'm curious, eccentric and just a little opinionated. Surrealist in thought, Fauvist at heart, this is my almost daily art journal, eccentric and eclectic, explorative and absurd.

circles samplers 2

These ones are quite romantic, sheer layered over stretch velvet, then frayed, using machine embroidery and hand. And normally i wouldn't do cutesy-pretty but i have to use these charms somewhere....

I could see a slough of these used as a bedspread or cushion for a little girl, or froufrou type :}

Space age circles! There are products available now to "encapsulate", but these are parts of packaging for sequins and beads! Save some money and recycle: i bet you can find as many of these in diferent shapes on your  batteries, toothbrushes, candy or whatever packaging, rather than spending the money on a "product", which probably comes in one of the shaped plastic "encapsulators" to boot! You can tuck the edges of these under the main fabric, treating it as a sort of reverse applique, cover the edges with trims or ephemera, or just make it part of the design.

I'm not really sure yet where i'd use this idea, but i do really like it--course it could be the shiny copper foil i machine stitched on as well :}

I might suspend danglies in this--remember your orientation if you do this--is it going to be flat or on a wall?

Speaking of recycling, i save all the foil from the tops of our coffee cans (and we drink a lot of coffee)--also spacey or tech in feel, they are great as coasters! Insulated and kewl, (or hot, as your heart desires)!

These would also be great stitched together as a sort of tray, trivet or wall piece :} Or how about a high tech look to a textile art something? (see here for the instructions)

And circles don't have to "be" circles: they can be intimated as well, just stitch the outlines by hand or machine. Or "un-circles", also known as holes!

Here's today's other favourite, stapled because pulling a needle is a wee bit painful:

The Cabochon Rose is often used in millinery, has a lot of dimension due to its technique and looks fabulous in a variety of materials, ordinary and wierd :}

Next, what if i build on them? What if i cut circles out of the circles? What if they weren't just circles?
